What is sequencing?

Sequencing is a reading strategy that enables readers to restate an event on a given text in the right order. Aside from that, this reading strategy allows you to quickly identify the components of the text—the beginning, middle part and the end. Here are other benefits of sequencing:
  • Improves your reading comprehension
  • Elevates your organizational skills
  • Boosts your critical-thinking skills
How to use sequencing in reading?

For PTE test takers who want to try sequencing in reading texts, you can use any reading material that you can find at home or in your PTE training classes. Here are the practical ways on how to use this reading strategy:
  • Check the headings and subheadings
  • Most of the reading passages contain headings and subheadings which are essential information to which readers must pay attention. In sequencing, you must write down all the headings and subheadings that you find in their right order. You can also apply personal shorthand when writing these important words to save time.
  • Look for essential key points
  • When looking for vital points in the text, you must check for the names, locations, dates, figures and other important events as these ideas and information can help you understand the reading passage. As you search for every key point, write it under the heading or the subheading that you have already written on a piece of paper.
  • Read the first and the last paragraph
  • Reading the introductory paragraph helps you get the main idea and concept of the text. On the other hand, the last paragraph contains the summary and conclusion of the reading passage. Don’t forget to read these essential parts as these ideas will help you comprehend the whole text.
