Reading a text
aloud is the second task in the PTE Speaking Test. For this item type, your
task is to read a text aloud from the computer screen. You will have 30 to 40
seconds to prepare, and the recording time depends on the length of the text.
This speaking task assesses your ability to read a short text using appropriate
pronunciation and intonation.

speaking task 2.
1. Read the instructions. The PTE Speaking Task 2: Read Aloud
consists of the following guidelines:
a. You will see a recording status box
which shows a countdown until the microphone opens.
b. You will hear a short tone indicating
that you can now begin reading the text aloud.
c. You must end reading the text before the
progress bar reaches the end.
2. As you read the short
text, look for vital words or phrases so you can easily understand the main

skimming short texts.
3. Break the short text
into meaningful chunks, using punctuations as a guide. Doing this shows you where to pause, as
well as to raise and lower your voice at the proper places of the short text.
4. If you see any
unfamiliar word, learn how to pronounce it before the actual recording. Keep in mind that you can only record
your response once, so you need to pronounce each word accurately. During your PTE review Manila sessions, keep a journal of new
words you acquired to boost your vocabulary.
5. Maximize the
preparation time. Don’t
waste your time rereading the short text. Read the text once. Then highlight
critical words in the short text. Before the preparation time ends, make sure
that you’re 100% ready.
6. Speak clearly and
calmly. Start reading
the short text aloud as soon as the tone beeps. Enunciate each word clearly.
There is no need to rush as it might cost you to stutter or skip some words.
7. If you mumble or forget
a few words, don’t stop speaking.
If you keep quiet for a long time, you might lose a point.
8. When you read the text
aloud, make sure to stress the words that carry critical points. Utilize the rising and falling
intonation patterns to display how ideas and concepts are connected to the
short text.
9. At the end of each
recording, check if the progress bar reaches the end. Don’t worry if you finish speaking
before the progress bar touches the end. Just keep quiet and wait for the next
short text.
10. Make sure to record all the short text before you proceed
to the next part of the PTE Speaking Test.

After the tone, start speaking immediately. Do not start speaking before the microphone opens because your voice will not be recorded.
You should speak clearly. There is no need to rush.
Finish speaking before the progress bar reaches the end. The word “Recording” changes to “Completed”.
You are only able to record your response once.
TIP: If you remain silent for longer than 3 seconds, the recording will stop.
