Top Tips for Re-Order Paragraph Tasks in PTE Reading

Re-order Paragraphs is the third task type of the PTE Reading exam. Here’s how it works.
  •     The page will be divided into two tables. The table on the left is titled “Sources” and is made up of texts arranged randomly. The table on the right is titled “Target” and is made up of blank boxes.
  •     You must rearrange the texts on the left side so that they’d flow logically. To do so, you must move the text boxes to the right table. Left-click a text box to select it (its outline will turn blue). Then, transfer it to your desired location on the right table.
  •     You can deselect a box by left-clicking any part of the page.

Re-order the sentences in the least amount of time possible. Refine your strategy for this reading task-type by enrolling in the best PTE online course review and practicing the following tips.

1. Skim the text boxes before re-ordering them.
Get the gist of the passages before moving any of them. Take note of their keywords (e.g., nouns, pronouns, verbs, recurring terms, etc.). Use them to determine the general idea of the original text. Knowing the subject of the passage will help you figure out its logical order.

2. Know how to move the text boxes.
There are two ways to move the text box from the left to the right table. First, by selecting the box and dragging it to your desired location. Second, by using the arrow buttons throughout the page. Here’s how the latter works.

Select the text box you want to move. Then, left-click the left and right arrow buttons in the middle of the screen. Once, it’s in the right table, use the up and down arrow buttons on the right side of the page to move it to your desired location.

Practice using both ways during your PTE online review sessions.

3. Locate the topic sentence.
The topic sentence is the core passage of the text. All the other sentences revolve around it. Find the topic sentence, and you’ll find it easier to restore order to the jumbled passages.

Keep in mind that the topic sentence can stand alone. It does not:

·         contain a pronoun;
·         start with a transition signal; and
·         refer back to actions or events previously mentioned (usually through the use of passive verb tenses).

Practice finding the topic sentence during your sessions in the best PTE online course review.

4. Know how you’re going to be graded.
The Re-Order Paragraphs section tests your ability to discern an academic text’s cohesive organization. You’ll be scored based on how many boxes were you able to place in the position. Take note: this task type implements the partial credit grading system. So, you’ll get the maximum score points if all the sentences are in the correct order. Otherwise, you’ll receive a complete or partial point reduction.

Don’t stop with the reading exam’s Re-order Paragraphs section. Develop your approach to the other PTE task types as well.
