Time Management Tips for PTE Speaking Sub-test
For students enrolled in a PTE review center, read and follow these three time management tips for the Speaking Section.

1. Determine the prompt length of each speaking task. The following is a list of the speaking tasks and their corresponding preparation, listening and recording time frames, and question items:

Ø  Personal Introduction
§  Preparation Time: 25 seconds
§  Recording Time: 30 seconds
§  1 question item

Ø  Read Aloud
§  Listening Time: 30–40 seconds
§  Recording Time: 30–40 seconds
§  6–7 question items

Ø  Repeat Sentence
§  Listening Time: 3–9 seconds
§  Recording Time: 15 seconds
§  10 -12 question  items

Ø  Describe Image
§  Preparation Time: 25 seconds
§  Recording Time: 40 seconds
§  6–7 question items

Ø  Re-tell Lecture
§  Listening Time: 90 seconds
§  Preparation Time: 10 seconds
§  Recording Time: 40 seconds
§  3–4 question items

Ø  Answer Short Questions
§  Listening Time: 3–5 seconds
§  Recording Time: 1–2 seconds
§  10–12 question items

 PTE Manila is the perfect venue to plan all the activities you are going to do before taking the Speaking Sub-test. Here is a sample plan for each speaking task:

  1. Personal Introduction
  • Read the prompts carefully.
  • Organize your responses.
  • Use personal shorthand to write down your answers quickly.
  • Speak clearly and calmly.
2. Read Aloud
  • Break the text into meaningful chunks, using punctuations as a guide.
  • During the recording time, highlight all the critical points about the text.
  • Apply the rising and falling intonation patterns to display how ideas are connected in the text.
3. Repeat Sentence
  • When listening to the recording, pay attention to the phrasing of the sentence.
  • Mimic the stress and intonation patterns of the sentence.
4. Describe Image
  • Examine the image and ask yourself “What is the main idea of the image?”
  • Organize your description by using a note-taking strategy.
  • When recording your response, use descriptive words. 
5. Re-tell Lecture
  • Listen to the recording carefully.
  • Write down all the critical points about the lecture.
  • Speak clearly. Mention all the important information about the lecture.
6. Answer Short Questions
  • Analyze the questions.
  • Look for keywords and key phrases in the questions.
  • Give short and accurate responses.

3. Read the instructions before answering the speaking tasks. Keep in mind the following reminders during the PTE Speaking Sub-tests:

Ø  You can only record your responses once.
Ø  If you remain silent for longer than 3 seconds, your recording will immediately stop.
Ø  Wait for the short tone before recording your responses.
