A Guide to the PTE Reading Exam's Scoring Criteria

The PTE Reading Exam

Reading is the third linguistic ability gauged in the PTE Academic exam. You have less than an hour—specifically 32–41 minutes—to complete the five components of the test. Below is an overview of the exam. Enroll in a PTE course to learn more about each section.
  1. Multiple-Choice, Choose Single Answer
    Number of items: 2–3
    Scoring: correct/incorrect
    Communicative skills scored: reading

  2. Multiple-Choice, Choose Multiple Answers
    Number of items: 2–3
    Scoring: partial credit for each correct response (points will be deducted for every incorrect choice selected)
    Communicative skills scored: reading

  3. Re-Order Paragraphs
    Number of items: 2–3
    Scoring: partial credit for each correctly ordered and adjacent pair
    Communicative skills scored: reading

  4. Reading: Fill in the Blanks
    Number of items: 4–5
    Scoring: partial credit for each correctly completed blank item
    Communicative skills scored: reading 

  5. Reading and Writing: Fill in the Blanks
    Number of items: 5–6
    Scoring: partial credit for each correctly completed blank item
    Communicative skills scored: reading and writing

Credit Systems: How Each Test Type Is Graded

Unlike in the speaking, writing, and listening exams, there are no enabling skills scored in the reading test. The scores depend solely on whether the taker got their answer right or wrong—although there are variations on how each item is credited.
